Using a system in Texas Hold'em poker
Many players in poker would be better suited to using mechanical type systems of when to make their bets calls and raises and not to mention folds of course. Why is this? Well simply put, poker is a game where it is difficult to draw delineation points for when you should do certain things. Texas Hold'em while appearing very simple to the novice and beginner is a fantastically complex game and it gets even more complex when you add the human element.
It is the human element that gives the game its greatest difficulties. A player has the ability to tilt, alter their game due to pressure, alter their game due to winning and losing money and the other players on their table. If these alterations are positive then this can be a good thing but it is when the alterations alter the players game or state of mind in a negative way that it then becomes a problem.
The problem with using a system in a game like Texas Hold'em is that there is a tremendous negativity towards them in much of the poker literature and on the coaching sites. This is understandable to a point but only when you consider that many of the players who are imparting the knowledge are themselves already successful players. To be successful in poker involves having certain personality traits. You may be aware of what these are or you may not but what you may not be aware of is if you have what it takes to be a poker player or not.
This is why many successful Texas Hold'em players believe that it is their superior game and intelligence that gets them the edge. In today's game this is not enough although in years gone by it would have been. If you have destructive personality traits that seriously hinder your ability to make good poker decisions then you probably will not make it playing poker unless you can mechanise the process.
One of the biggest steps that a poker player can take in their career is to develop what is called a "basic strategy" for the particular game that they are playing. These are the plays that you make that are theoretically correct given certain criteria at the table like your position, hand strength and action before it gets to you. It does not matter what the strategy is as long as you have one and it will seriously help novice players or players who are struggling with their game to mechanise the process.
In a strange kind of way, having a mechanised process like this can prevent a player from tilting and this can especially be the case where players are prone to losing control by being too much of a perfectionist and who mentally beat themselves up when things go wrong. Using a mechanised system will not make you a great poker player but it can make you a winning poker player. Seeing as the vast majority of poker players do not make money long term then this has to be a tremendous step forward for many people.
